Keeping it brief! More stars = more unique/memorable. 2 sentences per place.
***Surugaya Kahei - Akihabara - Fermented shellfish guts that had such insane flavor that my sushi meal the next day was banal. Serious mermaid cuisine.
***Kyoto Katsugyu - Near Kyoto Station - Wagyu Katsu which I have trouble understanding how they kept the middle so medium-rare, melt-in-your-mouth pink and the outside katsu so wonderfully crispy brown. Comes with rice, curry sauce, grated yam and soup!
*Tomisushi - Near Gion - Great sushi and atmosphere but nothing remarkable.
***Kagari Ramen - Ginza - Tori-Paitan Soba had the thickest, richest, fattiest chicken bone marrow broth I've ever encountered and the seasonal veggies added the necessary elegance for me to feel less like a monster. Highly recommend if you can wait an hour in line for one of the 8 seats.
*Kaisendon Ooedo - Tsukiji Fish Market - Fish was OK; the ikura was especially potent!
**Sushi Bar Yasuda - Near Nogizaka - Intimate omakase with renegade sushi chef Yasuda. The scallop, giant clam, mackerel and kampachi were the most memorable.
*Ippudo Ramen - Ebisu - The Akamaru Special ramen was classic and the noodle hardness was excellent. Nothing outstanding. (forgot a pic)
**Kyousi Honoka - Ryogoku - The appetizer included a "cheese tofu" with fermented tuna on top. The buckwheat soba had a nice supple texture and the dipping broth brought the warm hug.
**Negishi - Ueno - My juiciest and most savory tongue experience - human or ox. Also comes with soup, unlimited rice and grated yam!
**Train Station Bentos - Kyoto Station - If someone made a bento subscription delivery service in LA that mimicked the beauty and taste of these, I'd pay good money!
Kaiseki supper and breakfast - **Yoshinoya Ryokan & ***Minshuku Kuraya - So many incredibly detailed dishes! I have no clue what half of them were but I'd eat them forever and again (especially after 11.5 mile uphill hikes).
Mcdonalds - Asian Mcdonalds are my ultimate guilty pleasure; they're just way better! (I'm slowly making progress in my secret ongoing Mcdonalds tour of Asia.)
